Sujalam Sufalam Project

Introduction:Srishti Seva Sansthan, a nonprofit organization working in Maharajganj, Uttar Pradesh, implemented the Sujalam Sufalam Project from May 2015 to April 2018. The project aimed to enhance the income of small and marginal farmers and women through agro-based livelihoods, focusing on scientific production technologies, water conservation, and government linkages.

Project Background:The project was implemented in 17 Gram Panchayats of Sadar Block, Maharajganj, covering 2,665 marginal farmers. The project addressed issues like flood vulnerability, forest proximity, and low family income, with the goal of improving and sustaining livelihoods and food security for marginal farmers.

Project Interventions:The project interventions included:

  1. Forming 131 farmer groups across 17 Gram Panchayats, involving 2,665 members.
  2. Providing capacity-building trainings and exposure visits on CBO promotion, agro-techniques, and water sensitization.
  3. Promoting water-saving techniques like drip irrigation and sprinkler systems.
  4. Training farmers on improved practices like raised bed cultivation, Pusa Hydrogel use, and mulching.
  5. Facilitating exposure visits for farmers to learn about innovative crops like vetiver.

Key Achievements:The project achieved significant results, including:

  1. Improved livelihoods of marginal farmers.
  2. Increased adoption of improved agricultural practices.
  3. Enhanced water conservation.
  4. Improved access to government schemes.
  5. Increased income of farmers.

Case Studies:The project has several success stories, including:

    1. Kanchandevi of Ahmadpur, who adopted Machan cultivation, increasing her family income significantly.
    2. Pavitra Devi of Khutaha, who increased her yields through SRI, onion bed cultivation, and mentha cultivation, leading to the purchase of a tractor.
    3. Premchand Nishad of Karmaha, who increased his income through improved farming techniques.

Conclusion:

The Sujalam Sufalam Project has made a significant impact on the lives of marginal farmers in Maharajganj. The project's focus on agro-based livelihoods, water conservation, and government linkages has improved the livelihoods of 2,665 marginal farmers. The project's success stories demonstrate the potential for sustainable agricultural practices to improve the income and well-being of rural communities.
