Adolescent Empowerment Programme: Empowering Adolescents in Maharajganj
Srishti Seva Sansthan, in partnership with Breakthrough Trust and supported by Adolescent Empowerment Programme in 90-gram panchayats across Nautanwa, Brijmanganj, Laxmipur and Mithaura blocks in Maharaj Ganj. The program aimed to promote gender equity among adolescents, focusing on building "Mother-Daughter Bonding" and reaching 9,136 adolescents aged 11-14 years and 6,135 adolescents aged 15-18 years.
The program adopted a multi-faceted approach, including thematic community inputs, advocacy and networking, strengthening Village Level Child Protection Committees (VLCPCs) and School Management Committees (SMCs), and recognizing mother-daughter relationships through the mother-Daughter Award.
The program achieved significant results, including orienting 9,136 adolescents on 10 chapters through 2,037 Ujjawal Tara sessions and 435 Roshan Tara sessions. Community interactions reached 6,135 adolescents through 150 monthly meetings, promoting advocacy against gender-based violence and discrimination, negotiation skills, and life skill development.
At the family level, the program increased understanding of gender discrimination, mobility for girls, and school re-enrolment. Community-level outcomes included reduced dropout rates, increased Nari Sangh awareness, and community discussions on gender-based issues.
The program also mobilized communities through various initiatives, including Video Van shows, Theatre of the Oppressed performances, Hyper-Local Campaigns, and Kishori Melas. The Mother-Daughter Award recognizes and celebrates positive mother-daughter relationships.
The program demonstrated a positive impact, with increased awareness of gender-based discrimination, improved negotiation skills, and enhanced community engagement. Adolescents, teachers, principals, and community members testified to the program's positive influence.
Key program outcomes included empowering adolescents to challenge gender norms, strengthening mother-daughter relationships, increasing community awareness and engagement, and improving access to education and health services. The program also strengthened VLCPC functionality, ensuring a sustainable impact on adolescent empowerment in Maharajganj.
