Empowering Rural Women (ERW) Project
Introduction:Srishti Seva Sansthan (SSS) has been working in Maharajganj, near the Indo-Nepal border, focusing on marginalized rights. The Empowering Rural Women (ERW) project, supported by Sir Dorabji Tata Trust & Allied Trusts, aims to empower 7500 rural women in 30 Gram Panchayats.
Project Background:The ERW project focuses on strengthening Nari Sanghs, promoting women's leadership, rights realization, and institutional development. It addresses issues like NREGA wages, PDS access, domestic violence, and maternal health. The project promotes collective advocacy, linking Nari Sanghs with government officials and other stakeholders.
Progress Against Planned Activities:
During the reporting period (November 2014 to October 2015), SSS made significant progress in implementing project activities. Key achievements include:
- Conducting 351 Nari Sangh monthly meetings, with 21,813 participants.
- Organizing a district-level public hearing on PDS issues.
- Supporting Nari Sangh advocacy efforts on NREGA, PDS, and Gram Sabha issues.
- Conducting 22 social audits on NREGA in Gram Panchayats.
- Organizing Gram Sabha awareness rallies in all 30 Gram Panchayats.
- Providing domestic violence awareness and support to Nari Sangh members.
Challenges and Lessons Learned:Despite progress, the project faced challenges, including policy changes and module unavailability. These challenges affected the implementation of certain activities, such as Gram Shivirs on domestic violence issues.
Conclusion:
The ERW project has made significant strides in empowering rural women in Maharajganj. SSS will continue to work with Nari Sanghs, promoting women's leadership, rights realization, and institutional development. The project's focus on collective advocacy and linking Nari Sanghs with government officials has shown promising results, and SSS looks forward to building on these achievements in the future.
